A Collection of Unique Thanksgiving Pie Recipes
I’m pretty sure there’s nothing I love more than pie on Thanksgiving Day. The aromas, the cozy “hug” your home gives you when baking, the love that you feel as you pour a little sweetness into something you’re serving your family and friends. Don’t get me wrong. I love everything else about Thanksgiving dinner too. But there’s something extra special about pie. It just makes every holiday feel that much more, well, holiday-ish.
You can’t go wrong with traditional pie recipes. After all, I have been known to eat pumpkin pie for breakfast on more than one occasion. But it’s also nice to mix things up a bit and try some twists on the classics. This year, I intend to do just that. With Thanksgiving only a week away, I’ve collected pie recipes that are a unique variation on all of those scrumptious holiday pies we love – pumpkin, apple and pecan.
Pumpkin
- Pumpkin Pie with Butterscotch – This recipe by Eva Kosmas Flores is on the top of my list to try this year. I recently discovered Eva and am obsessed with her food styling and photography. She posted this recipe on her Instagram not long ago, and I can only hope mine turns out as good as hers looks.
- Bourbon Brûlée Pumpkin Pie – Next up is this delicious twist by Jessica Merchant of the blog How Sweet Eats. I’ve only ever had Creme Brûlée once, and it’s unlike any dessert I’ve ever eaten with the contrast between the crunchy top and smooth custard. The top of this pie looks scrumptious, plus it uses ingredients you would use to make a traditional pumpkin pie. Hence, this is a great option if you’re wanting to do both.
- Maple Pumpkin + Carameled Walnut Hand Pies – These little darlings by Kayley McCabe (or better yet known as The Kitchen McCabe) were immediately pinned to my recipe board on Pinterest as soon as they showed up in my Pinterest queue. While not a traditional pie, this flavor combination sounds incredibly rich. These would take slightly longer to make than a classic pie, but I think they would be perfect if you have to travel a longer distance to get to your Thanksgiving feast.
Apple
- Buckwheat Apple Galette with Maple Walnut Frangipane – I’m not sure if I really want to make this to eat it or just to photograph it because it is THAT pretty. This is Alanna’s recipe from The Bojon Gourmet, and it’s another one I’ve probably saved to my Pinterest more than once. It’s made with buckwheat flour to be a gluten-free recipe which piques my curiosity as I’ve never baked with buckwheat flour. However, the few items I have eaten with buckwheat have been hearty and delicious so I think this recipe is likely to be delicious too.
- Custardy Crème Fraîche Apple Pie – Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, I made made a sour cream apple pie. It became one of the top two most delicious pies I’ve ever eaten in all the land. The End. But really, I haven’t tried this recipe by Cynthia of Two Red Bowls, but I can only imagine how delicious it is if crème fraîche and sour cream are involved.
- Spice Cranberry Apple Pie + Oat Crust & Orange Custard Sauce – Another recipe that sounds scrumptious by The Kitchen McCabe. Cranberries are the one dish at Thanksgiving I skip every year. I’ve never been a fan of mixing fruit with savory food although I’m aware it’s loved by many. But mixing cranberries and apples is a combination I can get behind. I also love baking with oatmeal so the crust here intrigues me as well.
Pecan
- Coconut Pecan German Chocolate Pie – There isn’t much that needs said about this Taste of Home recipe. Pecans. Chocolate. Coconut. The makings of something delicious no matter what it is. (P.S. This is a chilled recipe.)
- Chocolate Espresso Pecan Pie – If you know me at all, you know how crazy much I love coffee. So I’ll give you one good guess as to why this pie sounds delicious to me. This recipe is from Sarah of The Gold Lining Girl, and I couldn’t think of how this combination could sound any more delectable.
- Salted Caramel Pecan Pie – Pecans and caramel go together like two birds of a feather. This recipe by Paula Deen has a simple ingredient list, but I have a feeling it’s rich in flavor.
So there we have it, an arsenal of Thanksgiving pie recipes to try that add an extra bit of flair to your Thanksgiving dessert lineup. If you have any recipes that are twists on the classics that you would love for me to add, leave a comment below. I plan to expand this list each year as I try new recipes. Until then, happy baking!
